Side effects of FUE
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is generally very safe procedure with Dr Jiindal. However, like any surgical procedure, there are potential side effects and risks to be aware of. Here are some common side effects associated with FUE:
- Pain and Discomfort: Mild pain or discomfort at the donor and recipient sites is common after FUE. It is very rare, but possible to have severe pain after the procedure. Stronger pain meds can take care of it.
- Swelling: Some swelling of the scalp, particularly around the forehead and eyes, may occur after the procedure. This usually settles down within a few days to a week.
- Bleeding: Minimal bleeding from the donor and recipient sites is normal during and immediately after the procedure. We will provide instructions on how to manage this and when to seek medical attention, if bleeding persists.
- Scarring: FUE leaves tiny, circular micro scars at the donor sites, these are typically less noticeable . However, in rare cases, individuals may develop hypertrophic scars (raised scars) or keloids, especially if they are prone to such skin reactions.
- Infection: Although rare, infection of the donor or recipient sites can occur. Proper post-operative care, including keeping the scalp clean and following our instructions, helps minimize this risk.
- Numbness or Tingling: Temporary numbness or tingling sensation in the donor or recipient areas may occur, usually resolving over time as nerves heal.
- Shock Loss: Temporary shedding of existing hair in the donor or recipient areas, known as shock loss, may occur following FUE. This is a normal part of the healing process and the transplanted hair typically regrows within a few months.
- Failed procedure: Very rare , but theoretically possible, that transplanted follicles under shock and fail to grow at all or show poor growth. We have a solution for such events as well and would discuss options with you should that happen.
- Folliculitis: Inflammation or infection of hair follicles can occur, leading to redness, itching, or small pustules around transplanted hair follicles. Proper hygiene and medications prescribed by your surgeon can help manage this. It is more seen in people with pre-existing skin allergies.
- Complications from Anaesthesia: Adverse reactions to local anaesthesia, such as allergic reactions or systemic effects, are rare but possible. Your medical history and any allergies should be discussed before the procedure.
We will discuss potential risks and side effects with you during your consultation based on your medical history, hair loss pattern, and expectations.
What should I expect from FUE Hair Transplantation?
One of the first principle to have a good satisfactory outcome , both for surgeon and patient , is to have a realistic expectation Here are some realistic expectations and outcomes you can anticipate from FUE:
- FUE aims to deliver a near-natural appearance and hairline. The transplanted hair should blend with your existing hair.
- FUE can help improve the overall density of hair in areas affected by hair loss. However, achieving the same original density is not possible in one procedure. Multiple sessions may be required to achieve desired density. Even then, the ideal density is hard to achieve as there are not enough donor grafts. Also, you loose existing hair in between transplanted hair too.
- The hair follicles transplanted during FUE are generally resistant to shedding, providing permanent results.
- After FUE, the transplanted hair follicles may shed within a few weeks to months. This is normal and part of the natural hair growth cycle. New hair growth usually begins within a few months, and you can expect improvement over 12 to 18 months.
- The extent of area covered by FUE depends on several factors, including the amount of donor hair available, the quality of the donor hair, the size of the bald area, and your individual hair characteristics. Dr Jiindal will discuss this with you.
Aftercare after FUE
We individualise aftercare of every patient following the procedure. A proper aftercare following Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is crucial to get desired results of your hair transplant procedure.
Immediate Post-Operative Care (First Few Days):
- We will advise you regarding washing your head or transplanted area, medication usage, and activities to avoid.
- Avoid touching or scratching the transplanted area to prevent dislodging grafts or causing infection.
- Protect both the donor and recipient areas from direct sun exposure, excessive heat, and trauma. Wear a loose-fitting hat. Do not press too hard.
- Spray water with spray bottle as recommended
- Take any prescribed medications, if any, as directed.
Washing and Care Instructions (First Week):
- We will call you after the procedure for first head wash and teach you how to do it yourself. There is no need to panic
- After washing, pat your scalp dry with a soft towel. Avoid rubbing the towel against the transplanted area.
- Do not use any hair products (like gels, sprays, or conditioners) without consultation with us.
- Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and intense exercise for at least 2 weeks following surgery.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and hydration. Smoking, alcohol, and recreational drugs impact hair growth and will give you suboptimal results.
What age is considered appropriate for Hair Transplant?
There is no maximum age for hair transplant. As long as you are healthy and fit and have donor site, hair transplant can be done. Saying so, the results will be better in younger age group than older age group.
There is no minimal age for hair transplant. Hair transplant can be done in early stages of baldness as well when it is impacting the patient’s overall mental health or appearance. There is no requirement to wait until progression of hair loss has stabilized, and the pattern of balding is predictable. It may result in bigger area of baldness and lesser donor site.
However, if a hair transplant is done too early, when hair loss is still actively progressing, it may result in needing additional procedures in the future.
Generally we do not consider hair transplant before 25 years of age unless there is an exception. Hair transplants may be considered for younger individuals who have stable hair loss patterns and realistic expectations.
Ultimately, the decision to get a hair transplant is made on an individual basis, taking into account the specific circumstances and goals of the patient.
We encourage you to discuss your case with us so that a suitable plan can be made.
When to see us?
- We are very careful to deliver best outcome to you.
However, any procedure has an inherent risk of complications. Feel free to contact us if you are concerned about:
- Infection: Watch for signs of infection such as increased redness, swelling, or drainage from the donor or recipient areas.

Each patient’s recovery may vary, so it’s essential to follow personalized recommendations.
