Understanding Hair Transplant Growth

Hi friends. I am Dr. Omi Jindul. I’m the Chief Hair Transplant Surgeon at Darling Downs Hair Transplant Clinic in Toowoomba. Today, I’ll be answering a few commonly asked questions that many of my clients bring up. I believe this will help you better understand the hair transplant process.
One major concern people have is about the growth of the transplanted hair—how they behave, when they start growing, and what to expect. So, I’m going to give you an insight into the growth process.

The process of hair transplant, as you may know, is natural—and the growth is natural too. The transplanted hairs have their inherent nature to grow, and it generally takes around 3 to 6 months for them to begin growing. However, full growth typically takes around 9 to 12 months.

That said, every individual is different. Growth may occur as early as 4 months or as late as a year. The key is to be patient. We can’t change the inherent nature of the hair—that’s something we must respect. But what we can do is support the growth by following the right aftercare.

Following the aftercare advice, taking your medications regularly, and maintaining a healthy routine can make a significant difference. We usually prescribe minoxidil and finasteride, if suitable for the client, for another 3 to 6 months. These medications help not only with regrowth but also with healing the donor site from where the grafts were taken.

To maximize hair growth, it’s important to live a healthy lifestyle. Avoid smoking, alcohol, and illicit drugs—they all negatively impact recovery. While these lifestyle choices don’t directly control the hair’s natural growth, they can support a healthier, quicker recovery process.

So, to summarize: the best tips after a hair transplant surgery for better growth include maintaining a healthy lifestyle and following the plan we give you. We’ll also guide you on a proper diet and what you can or cannot do to get the best results.

Remember, the time taken for hair to grow is entirely natural. It will likely take longer than you hope or expect, and we completely understand the emotional aspect—since the transplant is about restoring your appearance. But if you stay patient and positive, you will see the results.

I hope that helps ease your mind after the procedure. Thank you.
